The Safety Engineering program at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) is distinguished by its unique integration of atmospheric science disciplines, including atmospheric electricity, lightning physics, and electromagnetic compatibility. It has established a nationally recognized focus on lightning disaster prevention and protection.
The program traces its origins to 2000, with the establishment of the Electronic Information Engineering (Lightning Protection and Electromagnetic Compatibility Direction) program. In 2005, the Ministry of Education officially approved NUIST to offer the undergraduate program in Lightning Protection Science and Technology. By 2007, the university had obtained authorization to confer master's and doctoral degrees in Lightning Science and Technology, completing the full talent cultivation system from bachelor's to doctoral levels.
The program was included in the Ministry of Education’s Excellence Initiative in 2012. In the same year, the Lightning Protection Science and Technology program was reclassified under the first-tier discipline of Safety Engineering. It was recognized as a Jiangsu Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2020 and achieved Engineering Education Certification from the Ministry of Education in 2021.
Characterized by industry integration and interdisciplinary collaboration, the program covers professional theories and technologies across multiple fields, including:
Fundamentals of Safety Science
Safety Management
Ergonomics in Safety
