II. School Profile
Tracing its origins to the Department of Lightning Science and Technology established in 2000, the School of Emergency Management at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) was included in the Ministry of Education’s first list of pilot institutions for the Smart Learning Plant for Emergency Management and Safety in 2020. It was approved as a Jiangsu Provincial Key Emergency Management School in 2022 and officially inaugurated as an independent school on November 26, 2022.
The school offers a complete education system spanning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, with interdisciplinary curricula integrating science, engineering, and management. It hosts two doctoral programs in Lightning Science and Technology and Emergency Management, and two master’s programs in Safety Engineering and Emergency Management. At the undergraduate level, it offers four programs: Safety Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Reduction Science and Engineering, the Emergency Management Honors Program (Xianheng International), and a dual-degree program in Emergency Management + Environmental Engineering.
The Safety Engineering program was included in the Ministry of Education’s Excellence Initiative in 2012, recognized as a Jiangsu Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2020, and accredited by the Ministry of Education’s Engineering Education Certification in 2021. The Disaster Prevention and Reduction Science and Engineering program is the first specialized undergraduate program in China under the geosciences category (Geophysics). The Emergency Management program was established by integrating resources from the former Key Program of the China Meteorological Administration, Public Affairs Management, and the National First-Class Program in Administrative Management.
The school boasts strong teaching and research capabilities and a vibrant academic atmosphere. It has established research teams in areas such as integrated meteorological emergency management with communication-navigation-remote sensing collaboration, meteorological disaster monitoring and risk management, electrical safety and production safety, and smart emergency response and resilient cities.
The school has gathered top-tier talent, including academicians from the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Astronautics, recipients of China’s National High-Level Talent Plan (Category A), Young Talents of the National High-Level Talent Plan, CAS Hundred Talents Program scholars, holders of the Chartered Physicist designation from the UK Institute of Physics, Jiangsu Distinguished Professors, Jiangsu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talents, leaders of Jiangsu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teams, and candidates of the Jiangsu 333 High-Level Talent Training Project.
In recent years, the school has undertaken nearly 60 national-level research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, and various ministerial-level initiatives. Faculty have published over 860 papers in core and higher-tier academic journals, with more than 660 indexed in SCI(E), SSCI, or authoritative Chinese journals, including top-tier publications such as PNAS and Nature Communications. The school has obtained nearly 200 patents and published approximately 20 monographs and textbooks. Faculty have received awards such as the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize), Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize), Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (Third Prize), the Expert Contribution Award under the Sino-European Dragon Program launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Jiangsu Hundred Outstanding Natural Science Papers Award.
